Was bedeutet der Begriff "Green Insurance Card (Green Card)"?
« Zurück zum IndexThe Green Insurance Card – commonly called the “Green Card”, officially the “International Motor Insurance Card” – is an internationally recognised proof that a vehicle carries valid motor third-party liability insurance. It makes it easier for travellers to enter and pass through many countries with their own vehicle and, in the event of a claim, handles settlement via the national insurance bureaus.
When is the Green Card required?
Within the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein), Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and the United Kingdom, the Green Card is not required. The number-plate agreement applies there: the official registration plate already serves as proof of insurance. Even after Brexit, travellers between the EU and the UK need no Green Card.
It is still required in countries such as Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Albania, Azerbaijan, Morocco, Tunisia, Israel, Iran, Moldova and North Macedonia. For Italy, carrying it is recommended despite EU membership.
Travellers from abroad – Green Card via SATS
Anyone travelling in Europe with their own or an imported vehicle often has no easy access to a Green Card from a local insurer. SATS Group issues the Green Card on request – for 1, 2 or 3 months, with the option to extend. This keeps you and your vehicle reliably insured across Europe and the UK.
Good to know: since 2025 a digital Green Card on a smartphone is also valid; since 2021 it is printed on white paper – the name “Green Card” remains.
