Your partner for Kuwait: imports and exports by air & sea freight
Kuwait is a relatively small state on the Persian Gulf with a significant role in oil production. Energy resources strongly influence its economy. Germany is an important EU trading partner. Alongside imports and exports, investment in equipment creates demand for suitable transport solutions.
Sea, Air, Transport & Service has a partner presence in Kuwait City. Proximity to the international airport, the city’s national importance and the country’s relatively short distances make it a useful base. We handle air freight shipments for both imports and exports. Two major ports support our sea freight import and export services. Shuwaikh Port, near Kuwait City, is an important container gateway adjoining industrial facilities. Shuaiba Port lies approximately 45 km south of the capital and is another major industrial port.

Kuwait’s economy: historical background and 2014–2015 figures

The source placed approximately 80% of residents in the Kuwait City area. Despite diversification efforts, oil has remained central to the economy, bringing significant output and high average income but also exposure to price changes and unequal income distribution. The profile gave GDP of just under US$176 billion and income per person of approximately US$42,000 in 2014.
Kuwait’s location near Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia makes regional security conditions relevant to trade and transport. Its security partnership with the United States is an important part of that context. Iraq’s invasion in 1990 and the subsequent 1991 Gulf War illustrate the historical importance of this issue; they are not described here as the Iran–Iraq War.
The historical 2014 trade figures showed imports of just over US$27 billion and exports above US$103 billion, with oil and petroleum products accounting for more than 90% of exports in that profile. The listed main buyers were South Korea, India, Japan, the United States and China. Imports included machinery, transport equipment, manufactured goods and food. The listed suppliers were the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, Germany and India.

Kuwait: your freight forwarder for imports & exports
Kuwait is an important trading partner for Germany and the EU in the Persian Gulf. German companies mainly supply machinery, vehicles and automotive parts, electrical equipment, medical technology, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, while Kuwait supplies Europe primarily with petroleum and petroleum products. As an international freight forwarder headquartered in Munich, SATS Group organises shipments on the Kuwait route with reliable, transparent coordination through one point of contact.
Transport routes to Kuwait
- Sea freight: The main gateways are Shuwaikh in Kuwait City and the industrial port of Shuaiba to the south. Depending on the route and transshipment arrangements, transit from Northern European ports such as Bremerhaven and Hamburg is approximately five to six weeks, for either full container loads (FCL) or consolidated loads (LCL).
- Air freight: Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is the central air-cargo gateway. It provides a faster option than sea freight for time-critical and high-value shipments.
- Multimodal: On request, we combine sea, air and inland transport and integrate neighbouring Gulf states into a coordinated transport chain, subject to route and border availability.
Customs and documents
Kuwait belongs to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) customs union. Many goods are subject to a common import tariff of approximately 5% of their CIF value, with specific exceptions and different treatment for particular products, including some food, medical and pharmaceutical goods. There is no general EU–GCC free trade agreement in force, so no automatic bilateral preference should be assumed. For customs clearance of imports and exports, documents may include a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the correct commodity code. Some product groups require additional approvals. We coordinate the documentation and advise on the customs requirements applicable to the actual shipment.
From individual pallets to complete projects, SATS Group is your experienced partner for sea freight, air freight and customs clearance on the Kuwait route, supporting your goods between Germany, Europe and the Gulf with coordinated planning.
