Your partner for Qatar: imports and exports by air and sea freight

The emirate of Qatar on the Persian Gulf is one of the region’s established energy producers. Despite efforts to develop other sectors, oil and gas remain central to the country’s economy. Germany is an important trading partner for imported goods, and we can provide experienced support with air freight and sea freight. German expertise is also used in infrastructure projects. Many German companies have a presence in Qatar and require transport for international trade and project work.

Doha at the centre of Qatar’s logistics

Freight forwarding for imports and exports involving Qatar by air and seaMuch of the country’s activity is concentrated in the Doha capital region. Doha and neighbouring Al Rayyan form a major population and business centre. Hamad International Airport, close to Doha, is the country’s principal air gateway. Hamad Port is the main container gateway, while Ras Laffan and Mesaieed serve important industrial and energy-related port activities. Ras Laffan lies approximately 80 km north of Doha and Mesaieed approximately 40 km south.

Sea, Air, Transport & Service has a partner presence in Doha. The city’s central location and economic importance make it a useful base for organising transport to and from Qatar. Our team works with local partners to plan and deliver suitable solutions. These services extend beyond exports and imports. We also assist with vehicle transport and relocations to and from Qatar. In addition, we arrange specialist transport, including machinery and equipment.

Qatar’s economy: historical background and 2014–2016 figures

Flag of QatarQatar’s economy has long been shaped by oil and natural gas, despite efforts to diversify. The earlier economic profile quoted oil reserves of approximately 25 billion barrels and gas reserves of 25.5 trillion cubic metres, against a land area of around 11,000 square kilometres, roughly half the size of the German state of Hesse. It attributed approximately 60% of GDP to activities associated with these resources. The country has used energy revenues to develop its economy and infrastructure, including urban development in Doha, transport infrastructure and services, particularly finance. The reserve and GDP-share figures are historical background rather than a current resource assessment.

GDP reached almost US$212 billion in 2014, with output per person of almost US$95,000 in the historical profile. Falling oil prices brought GDP below that peak in 2015 and 2016. The population figure of 2.2 million quoted in the original profile also belongs to that earlier period. These fluctuations illustrate the economy’s exposure to oil and gas prices.

The historical trade figures showed a substantial export surplus: exports of US$131.7 billion compared with imports of US$31 billion in 2014. The listed main buyers were Japan, South Korea, India, China and the United Arab Emirates. Alongside energy products, exports included petrochemicals and steel. The listed suppliers were the United States, China, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. Imported goods included food, machinery, transport equipment and chemicals.

Qatar: your freight forwarder for imports & exports

Qatar is an important trading partner for Germany and the EU in the Persian Gulf. Trade flows are diverse: Germany and Europe primarily supply machinery, vehicles, chemicals and electronics to Doha, while Qatar, a major LNG exporter, supplies energy products, refined petroleum products and plastics to Europe. We support your imports and exports on this route with reliable planning and personal coordination.

Transport routes to Qatar

  • Sea freight: The central gateway is Hamad Port, south of Doha, a modern deep-water port. Depending on the carrier and route, the sea passage from Northern Europe, including Hamburg or Rotterdam, is approximately three to four weeks. We handle FCL and LCL shipments.
  • Air freight: For urgent and high-value goods, Hamad International Airport (DOH) is the main air gateway. Services from Germany can provide short transit times, including suitable temperature-controlled pharmaceutical and specialist shipments, subject to the required handling arrangements and carrier acceptance.
  • Multimodal: We coordinate combined sea–air and inland collection and delivery solutions to balance cost and transit time.

Customs and documents

Qatar is part of the GCC customs union. Many imports are subject to a common ad valorem duty, often 5% of the CIF value, while particular product groups have different treatment. An EU–GCC free trade agreement is not currently in force; do not assume an automatic bilateral tariff preference. Smooth customs clearance requires a commercial invoice, packing list and, where applicable, proof of origin. Some products are subject to additional conformity and import requirements. The exact tariff and conditions must be checked for the goods concerned.

Whether you need sea freight, air freight or a multimodal solution, SATS Group is your experienced partner for the Qatar route. We coordinate transport, documentation and customs clearance through one point of contact.
