CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) applies to sea and inland waterway only. As with CFR, the seller pays cost and freight to the destination port, but additionally takes out transport insurance (minimum cover Institute Cargo Clauses C).

Risk passes on board the vessel at the port of shipment. CIF is one of the most widely used sea-freight terms.
